Stereotyping
Due to stereotyping, women do not feel qualified to enter the world of politics; there are few political black role models nationally. When we speak of black women in politics there are few names easiest to recall e.g. Dianne Abbot, Dawn Potter, Baroness Amos, Baroness Oona King and Baroness Scotland. Successive governments have not reflected, represented, or advocated on behalf of black women; reflecting the under-representation of Black women in Government.
Inception
In September 2011 ‘The Clarion Voice’ women’s committee was subsequently set up so that members could explore ways in which they would wish to get involve in the different areas of politics; and to explore the relationship between the black community and politics.
Objectives
- Enable women who aspire to and/or are ready to become active in grassroots politics to sign up to a political party of their choice and work through the process en-route to their goal.
- Equip, enable and empower them through access to appropriate information, signposting and partnership working with other women led organisations etc.
- The organisation will create the environment that will enable women to understand the power/importance of their vote; recognise what political powers they have and how most of the decisions that affect their lives are governed by politics.
