Men's Subcommittee

Table of Contents

The Group was established in March 2011 with its first meeting on the 17th March 2011 at the Campanile Hotel, St Matthews Way, Leicester. At that meeting, a number of suggestions were made as to how the group could assist in delivering the aims and objectives of The Clarion Voice.

Approach

The suggestions included:

  1. Each member of the group would help recruit other men to join the organisation
  2. Organise men’s’ social events
  3. Organise debating events on subjects that are relevant to the community
  4. Look at ways of addressing fatherhood in the community
  5. Invite local politicians e.g. councillors to some meetings from time to time
  6. Explore how to get our communities to work together
  7. Create the possibility for mentoring of young people in the community and also identify and promote role models
  8. Explore ways of developing sustainable information sharing processes
  9. Organise fund raising events
  10. Define, establish and identify what success looks like for the organisation (What are the indicators of success?)
  11. Address the relationship between Continental Africans/ African Caribbeans & Africans from others parts of the world
  12. Explore identity crisis within the community and / or perception of self by African heritage people in the Diaspora
  13. Wealth Creation: Explore ways of assisting entrepreneurs (especially young people) within the community to establish and develop their business ideas in the continent of Africa, the Caribbean, UK and worldwide.

Inception

This resulted in the sub-committee arranging and executing a number of events, such as the Men’s dinner, with Professor Gus John as the main guest speaker at the African Caribbean Centre and two ‘One Big Cook Out’ events at the Highfield Rangers Sports and Social Club at Gleneagles Avenue, Leicester. The group also proffered ideas to the executive with regard to redeveloping the website.
